Somalia continues to play a critical role in maintaining regional security for Egypt, the Arab world, and Africa, according to Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty. Speaking at a high-level session during the Doha Forum 2025, Abdelatty emphasized Somalia’s importance in stabilizing the Horn of Africa and securing key regional interests.
The Minister underscored the significance of the African Union’s AUSSOM mission, describing it as a central tool for ensuring Somalia’s stability. He called on international partners to provide continuous and adequate funding for Somali forces during the ongoing transitional period to ensure operational effectiveness and sustained peace.
Abdelatty highlighted that Somalia faces interlinked security and political challenges, warning that certain regional actors are attempting to exploit these vulnerabilities for competitive advantage, potentially threatening the unity and sovereignty of the country. “The international community must act cohesively to support Somalia’s stability and prevent external interference that could destabilize the region,” he stated.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister also reaffirmed Egypt’s long-term commitment to Somalia, stressing that its engagement is guided by principles of sovereignty, national unity, and institutional development. He cited Egypt’s ongoing programs in training, education, and capacity-building, including initiatives by the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development (EAPD), Al-Azhar University, and the International Center for Conflict Resolution, Security, and Peacebuilding in Cairo (CCCPA).
Abdelatty concluded by calling for strengthened cooperation between Somalia and its international partners to safeguard recent gains in peace and security, urging the global community to continue supporting Somalia’s development and stabilization efforts.
