Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir Maareeye, participated in this year’s World Ministers of Agriculture Forum, held in Istanbul under the theme “Preventing Food and Water Loss and Safeguarding Our Future.”
In his keynote address, Minister Maareeye called for urgent, coordinated global action to tackle escalating threats of food insecurity and water shortages. He emphasized the increasing impacts of climate change, noting that Somalia continues to face recurrent droughts, declining agricultural productivity, and water scarcity.
The minister stressed that reducing food and water loss is not only an environmental responsibility but also an economic and humanitarian imperative. He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to implementing United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/74/209, which calls on countries worldwide to strengthen efforts to reduce food and water loss and achieve sustainable development.
