Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, today received a delegation from the United Kingdom led by the UK Ambassador-at-Large for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ms. Eleanor Sanders. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in advancing human rights and supporting Somalia’s institutional reforms.
Prime Minister Hamza congratulated the UK on its recent election to the UN Human Rights Council and expressed gratitude for Britain’s vital role in Somalia’s major gains, including the lifting of the arms embargo, debt relief, and Somalia’s return to the UN Human Rights Council.
He also briefed the delegation on the establishment of Somalia’s Independent Human Rights Commission, recently approved by both Houses of Parliament, noting that its members were selected based on merit, expertise, and professional experience.
For her part, Ms. Sanders commended the Somali government for the progress made in strengthening human rights protections across the country.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister accompanied by the Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, H.E. Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhsuumi, presented the UK delegation with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of Britain’s continued support to Somalia.
