Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federalism, and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hoosh), participated in a high-level IGAD ministerial meeting addressing the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration on Refugee Affairs.
Speaking at the forum, Minister Hoosh detailed the humanitarian situation in Somalia, focusing on refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), climate change, and recurrent droughts.
“Despite the challenges, Somalia is fully committed to implementing the principles and objectives of the Nairobi Declaration. Over the past years, we have continuously worked to turn these commitments into practical solutions that improve the lives of refugees, IDPs, returnees, and the wider domestic population,” Minister Ali Hoosh said.
He also highlighted Somalia’s recent legislative measures, including the Refugee and Asylum Act passed in September 2023 and the IDP Bill, enacted this month, bringing Somalia’s national frameworks closer to international and regional standards.
Finally, the minister called on IGAD member states to collaborate on regional security and joint efforts to strengthen infrastructure and services that support sustainable development and humanitarian protection.
